Happy Holidays

As the holidays approach, it’s gratifying to observe the progress we’ve made and recall the outstanding assistance we have received over the past year.  2006 has been an exceptionally good year for the Port of Pascagoula and we appreciate the confidence of our customers and efforts of all who helped us during the restoration process.  It’s a good feeling to have reached the point where it is totally “business as usual” and projects are infrastructure improvements and not hurricane repairs.

Cargo activity in the Port is on the rise.  Forest and paper products are up 34% for the first half of 2006 over 2005 and the cold storage facilities are now 100% operational with the recent completion of the expansion.  Seeing three reefer ships in the Pascagoula River Harbor this morning was a welcomed familiar sight.

We are looking forward to a new port tenant in the Bayou Casotte Harbor.  Pending approval from FERC, Gulf LNG Energy, LLC is on schedule to start construction on their LNG terminal in the next few months.

We enjoyed the opportunity to see many of our customers and associates recently at the Breakbulk Transportation Conference in New Orleans.  Personally, I look forward to that conference each year where I drive for two hours and then I am in a room with hundreds of people interested in the transport of breakbulk cargo - and I don’t have to change planes in Atlanta!

It was also my pleasure, as always, to see our friends from Caribbean Forest Carriers and Gearbulk during their recent visits to Pascagoula.

The Staff, Board of Commissioners and I wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Port Director

Cold Storage expansion at Terminal A

Following Hurricane Katrina, not only were repairs necessary for the cold storage operation at Terminal A,  a 26,000 sq. ft. expansion has been in process.   The enlarged facility, which was completed in October, 2006, includes additional blast freezing and storage capacity.  Gulf Coast Cold Storage, Inc. is the operator.

Sublease agreement signed for LNG Terminal

Gulf LNG Energy, LLC, has entered into a sublease agreement with the Jackson County Port Authority for 106 acres in the Port of Pascagoula.  The company plans to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the property.  The importation and regasification terminal will provide a daily output capacity of 1.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

Gulf LNG Energy, LLC, is acquiring all relevant licenses and permits as required by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).  This process is on schedule for completion early in 2007 with the start of construction beginning the first quarter of 2007.  The on stream target date is the third quarter of 2010.

The site is on state land in the Bayou Casotte Harbor that has been leased to the port authority.  The primary term of the sublease is thirty years with five ten/year options.

New Pilot Boat

The Pascagoula Bar Pilots continue to keep pace with the latest equipment and technology to insure efficient traffic flow in and out of the port.  They recently christened their new 54-foot pilot boat, the Horn Island.

The vessel is an aluminum deep “V” hull built by Silver Ships, Inc. of Theodore, Alabama.  Powered by twin MTU series 60 marine propulsion units with two 17 inch twin disc TDJ 170 water jets, the vessel has a service speed of 38 knots.

Mrs. Jazie Torjusen, wife of the late Captain Charles
Torjusen and mother of Captain Michael Torjusen christens the Horn Island.
